Clan of Xymox

If you like electronicy gothy dancy waveish music you'll love this band, Clan of Xymox was a darkwave band which formed in the Netherlands in 1983, definitely a band they play at home sweet home on goth night Wednesdays. they started off as Xymox with their first release called "Subsequent Pleasures", Yet adopted the name "Clan of Xymox" with their first self titled release on 4AD in 1985. 4AD was an independent label which put out such bands as Bauhaus, Modern English, Cocteau Twins, Birthday Party, This Mortal Coil, and Pixies.

This album is most enjoyable while listened to in a dark underground club, preferably one with a smoke machine and strobe lights. so if you want to enjoy this album to the full effect come to coldwave wednesday night at Home Sweet Home, 131 chrystie right below delancey. you know i'll be there.

The whole 'gothic' thing always seemed kind of silly to me. Even bands like Bauhaus, and especially Siouxsie & The Banshees, who are mostly responsible for contributing to the the dark imagery, and theatrical qualities of what became known as goth, these bands really fought tooth and nail to shun the 'gothic' label. I think they saw what became of certain punk bands who literaly hung a sign around their neck, and wanted to do someething they considered to be more genuine. 4AD was a really great label, as well as Factory records, and I would not consider Joy Division to be a 'gothic' band either. Neither would I consider Cocteau Twins to be a 'gothic' band. If you read any of the interviews, you rarely heard any band describing themselves as 'gothic' I think more of bands like Sisters, or the Mission when I think of 'gothic', or Specimen with the whole Batcave thing... I do like those bands, but really they just dont compare to groups like Dead Can Dance or The Cocteaus. And in retrospect, it was the bands who rejected the label that had a longer lasting impact, and flat out better music. Also alot of great bands, the Chameleons for instance, suffered for a lack of image, while being leagues better than most of the dress up type bands of the day.
