Angelface - A Wild Odyssey

A very mysterious Stooges sound-alike band from late 70s/early 80s France...The opening track is about a minute and a half of scary wolf howls, and then breaks into the most raw, primal sounding rock & roll you've ever heard, since the Stooges that is, of course. This could actually BE Iggy Pop singing for all I know or care, and it's in French which makes it even cooler. I picked up this nifty bootleg CD from Rockit Science on St Marks, after hearing them play it in the shop. It's worth picking up, for sure. Couldn't find anything about them on the internet, until I got the bright idea to try 'Google France', which I never knew existed...Anyway, the bootleg has their album 'A Wild Odyssey', as well as some live tracks from some French punk festival. Check it out if you can get a hold of it. My guess is the original album is worth hundreds.

Kafka Prosess and Toxic Narcotic

Kafka Prosess is a band from Scandinavia formed in the mid 80's.
I really like this song Ingen Fattige, Ingen Rike- check it out and I would like to hear what you think about it. The language sounds so good; foreign bands so often sing/write in english and I kind of understand, there is a nice flow and melody to it. Bands like Ratos de Porao from Brazil, for instance, sound a little awkward when singing in their native language. Plus accents are funny (Insomnio for example... they make no sense sometimes haha) This band, though, in its very short period of existence, just have a language that sounds so cool.

Another random thing... this 2003 Toxic Narcotic EP called Beer In The Shower . I don't even like Toxic Narcotic, or bagpipes that much, but, fuck, it sounds good. and Irish. Razorcake explains it better than I do: "Well, the thrash punk band with a grindcore sound at times puts out an instrumental EP that is Irish in flavor."

Electric Eels-The Eyeball Of Hell

This album blows my mind every time I hear it. These guys were from Cleveland, and are along the lines of other hometown greats The Pagans, and Rocket From The Tombs. There is something special about this record. This shit was cut in 1975! The first time I heard this, was a couple years ago. I thought that it was some weirdo fucked up Rip Off Records album that somehow slipped by me. I literally had to check 4 times just to make sure this record was for real. The Electric Eels really give The Stooges a run for their money, as far as being the original uncomfortable, angry adolescent rock and roll band in the cesspool that was Middle America in the 70's. I think that this is like a blueprint for everything that I ever want to do musically. It's really a shame that these guys do not get the recognition they deserve, for their originality and creativity. Just fucking listen to this, it's amazing.

Killing Joke - Brighter Than a Thousand Suns

Killing Joke is one of those groups, who's output just seems so vast, it's hard for someone to really know quite where to start, and none of their 'collection' releases really seem to do much justice. The fact is there are only two Killing Joke releases you ever need to worry about. One being their first release, that's the one which sleeve depicts the iconic imagery of shadowy, anonymous figures preparing to demolish a wall. The latter, being their 1986 release 'Brighter Than a Thousand Suns'. This is one of my all time favorites. They had already put out several albums treading closer to a more electronic/industrial, even dancy type sound, which is a high contrast from their first album. Though on early songs such as 'Requiem' and 'Wardance', it's perhaps not so difficult to fathom that BTATS is the album they would be releasing half a decade later. The title of the album refers to a quote describing the explosion of a nuclear bomb. Well, armageddon had come and gone, well not exactly, but at least Jaz Coleman had returned from his hide out in Iceland at this point to continue writing some extremely foreboding, cryptic, and very 'dance' sounding Killing Joke records. The production of BTATS is larger than life, very dramatic, very ethereal. Huge sounding drums, guitars that slice through your brain with lazer-like precision, pounding bass lines, and to top it off is Jaz Colemans over the top vocals. There is really nothing I could say to do this album justice. The atmosphere is tense, while the mind bending lyrics create visions of apocolyptic beauty. If you are a Sandman fan (dork, I know) you are probably already into this album. If not, this is the perfect album to have playing while reading volumes of Sandman. It's as if Coleman is chanelling some great, ancient mythological god, recalling the past, looking into the future, watching down from the heavens as we 'Move like pawns on chessboards.' Stand out tracks are, well, all of them really...But 'Sanity', which contains an eerie piano melody, over frightening guitars, and a heavy dance beat, and 'Chessboards' are probably the greatest. Do yourself a favor and find this album!

Randoms-ABCD / Let's Get Rid Of New York 1977

Do I even have to say anything about this, aside from that it's fucking timeless?



Lesser known than label mates The Dils and The Avengers, Randoms were kind of like a mix up of all the guys from the 70's LA scene. Everybody in the band was either in The Screamers or Black Randy And The Metro squad. John Doe is on bass for Let's Get Rid Of New York, which is one of the reasons why it rules. This fine piece of wax goes for like 300 bones, so pop a Quaalude and listen up motherfuckers.

ABCD sounds like a Dolls rip KBD type of thing, but Let's Get Rid of New York is definitely wins at greatness.

I have been looking for this one for ages. If anybody owns/finds a copy, I will buy it from you. This is Mau Maus' last EP, which pissed off their fans so much that the singer left the band out of shame. A complete departure from the UK hardcore punk sound that they had prior to this release, Nowhere To Run exhibits a much more melodic sound. The Church - The Blurred Crusade

After such a fine debut as Of Skins and Heart, creating a follow-up might have been a burden for the Church -- and maybe it was, but the end result was well worth it. Perhaps even better than their first, Blurred Crusade captures what for many remains the classic early Church sound, blending both the various strains of '60s inspiration and postpunk drive detected from the start with an even more elegant melancholy. Musically, both Willson-Piper and Koppes are just fantastic, their combination of guitar playing running the range from sparkling post-Byrds chime to sharp power. If the group doesn't fully explode here as much as later albums would demonstrate, especially on Heyday, that perhaps can be laid at producer Bob Clearmountain's feet. Consider the slow but steady build up of "When You Were Mine," guitar lines and notes setting the scene before fully kicking into the main riff and the clever but not forced production on the vocals on some of the middle verses. Add on the fantastic solo about four minutes in, and this is great rock music, period, deeply impressive coming on a sophomore album. Highlights are plentiful throughout Blurred, but the best numbers are perhaps the opening "Almost With You," a note-perfect combination of hooks and downbeat but not morose atmosphere, and the lengthy, powerful "You Took." Willson-Piper's lead vocal number "Field of Mars" and the brief, concluding "Don't Look Back" are further songs of note.

Pagans-Pink Album

Okay, I had to break the chain of like 5 goth album posts. This will always be one of my favorite records. No-bullshit, loud fuzzy rock and roll, the way it was supposed to be. This was one of the best responses to what happened after the metallic sound of the Motor City started to spread around. Some of Cleveland's most notable bands of this genre include The Dead Boys, (early)Pere Ubu, and Rocket From The Tombs. Pissed off kids from shitty situations picked up instruments and bashed out their anger, blablabla the way it always happens. Anyway, if youve never heard this, fucking hear it.

MARCH VIOLETS

The March Violets began in 1981 as one of Leeds' four famous drum machine bands, alongside the Sisters of Mercy, Three Johns and Red Lorry Yellow Lorry. The Violets favored stark, primitive rhythm-box beats (as did the others), overlaid by Loz Elliott's heavy bass throb and Tom Ashton's inventively droning guitar (reminiscent of Magazine's John McGeoch). What set this quartet apart was the unique interplay (… la X or the Airplane) between the two complementary lead vocalists — big, bearded Simon Denbigh and enigmatic Rosie Garland. His dark, commanding intonations intertwined with her eerie soprano wailing, imbuing the simplistic material with a strident, almost dissonant mystery.

Christian Death

It'll probably be a while before I can listen to Only Theatre of Pain without immediately thinking back to the second semester of 10th grade, because that's when I first heard this album. Seeing as my high school mental/emotional distress was just getting heavier, it was a very fitting thing to come across and the seedy, eerie, and schizophrenic atmosphere that is this album. Pretty kitsch I know. I was going to punk shows at the continental, the knitting factory and don hills but I'd always come home to Rozz Williams as well as various 4ad bands, there just wasn't anywhere to listen to it and connect with other kids.


Rozz Williams founded Christian Death in October 1979, at the age of 16, with bassist James McGearty, drummer George Belanger and guitarist Jay. The band name was a satirical play on words derived from the designer brand Christian Dior. The first Christian Death performance in front of a live audience was at a Castration Squad gig in 1980, when Castration Squad invited Christian Death on stage to play a couple songs. In 1980 and 1981, the band played many shows with 45 Grave, another L.A. deathrock group, though they also played shows with punk bands like Social Distortion and The Adolescents.

Formed in Colchester, Essex, England, in 1979 by Robbie Grey (vocals), Gary McDowell (guitar, vocals), and Michael Conroy (bass, vocals),[2] Modern English was originally known as The Lepers. The group expanded to "Modern English" when Richard Brown (drums) and Stephen Walker (keyboards)were subsequently added to the line-up of the indie rock band.

A debut single, "Drowning Man" was released in 1980 on the Limp Records label. The band's full-length Mesh & Lace, released by 4AD Records a year later, drew heavily on the gloom rock sound already patented by bands such as Joy Division.

As he was toiling on Kill Uncle, Morrissey released Bona Drag, a compilation of singles and B-sides, including "Everyday Is Like Sunday" and "Suedehead" from Viva Hate. While the record conveniently overlooks some rarities, the selections on Bona Drag are uniformly first-rate and many of the songs -- "Picadilly Palare," "Interesting Drug," "November Spawned a Monster," "The Last of the Famous International Playboys," "Lucky Lisp," "Disappointed," "He Knows I'd Love to See Him," and "Ouija Board, Ouija Board" -- are Morrissey classics, arguably making Bona Drag a more consistent and entertaining record than Viva Hate.

Depeche Mode

I got a gift certificate to fye one time and at this point i wasnt buying cds so got 2 dvds. One of those two was a bootleg DM bio/documentary from germany. It looks like a 5th grader made it using powerpoint but the interviews are really interesting and the anecdotes they tell make you feel like youre a part of them. Dave Gahan is to attractive to be straight, i know everyones like what wait, hes mad gay. Hes not, he lives with his third wife Jennifer, their daughter and Jennifer's son from a previous relationship. He also has a son from his first marriage. So i def have a chance.

also a founding memeber an integral part of DM is Vince Clarke. He is a synthesizer god. After leaving DM he went on to be in Yazoo, The Assembly and Erasure (andy bell is a queen among men).

The Zips Reissue

The Zips is a band from Scotland formed in 1978. Their EP was recently reissued by brooklyn-based Sing Sing Records, making it available to us mortals who can't afford to spend hundreds of dollars on beloved vinyl. On an e-mail the singer and guitarist, Jonh McNeill (a.k.a. Jonzip), told me: "the re-issue has been a real worthwhile exercise for us, altho we did have doubts to begin with. you see, the original was only a 500 copy issue, and had become quite a collector's item, fetching prices up to $427 on ebay! and we thought it might destroy the rarity value. but the guys at Sing Sing convinced us that the collectors would still want one of the originals regardless of the re-issue, and that it would give us a new audience"

I said "It's really great that you guys have decided to make your music available not only to me but to a wider audience. And they are right, collectors will be collectors. But not everyone who buys vinyl is that type of collector (or can afford to be)"

Nevertheless, check out this band that has a nice classic Ramones/UK Subs sound.

If you have spent many hours watching Dolemite over and over again like I have, then download this for your listening pleasure. I put this album on when I get drunk by myslef. Rudy Ray Moore (R.I.P) is also a fucking hilarious human being, if you get any of his stand up, which isnt to hard to find (This Ain't No White Christmas is a must have). My only complaint about this is that the organ gets a little corny sometimes. This is a generalization, but it kind of reminds me of Booker T and The MG's, but with 10x more FUNK.

Harry Nilsson

On beautiful spring mornings such as this, when i wake up miraculously at 9:30 after going to bed at 6 am, i open my blinds and take in the sun as i try to recover from hang over hell. And the best remedy i've found is Harry Nilsson. Now i realize this post wont be appreciated by all, but eh...if you like feel good movies such as "You've Got Mail" you'll know a few of his wonderful tunes. Considering i dont see day light most of the time, this is when i mimic my fathers morning ritual as it makes me feel more responsible than i have been recently. This is when I generally listen to his music while running around the house with a cup of coffee pretending to be a functioning human being, following around my parents while we all sing along and take part in morning errands. mind you i do this while wearing pink pajamas an oversized robe, slippers, and carrying the new york times folded up under my arm (best of all... pretending like im actually going to read it...pft).

Harry Edward Nilsson III (June 15, 1941 – January 15, 1994) was an American songwriter, singer, pianist, and guitarist who achieved the height of his fame during the 1960s and 1970s. For most of his recordings, he did not use his first name, and was credited only as Nilsson.

Despite some significant critical and commercial successes, including two Grammy Awards and two Top 10 singles, Nilsson's tendency to make broad stylistic jumps from one record to the next – coupled with his generally iconoclastic decision-making – kept him from fully capitalizing on his career. Among Nilsson's best-known recordings are "Without You", "Jump into the Fire", "Everybody's Talkin'" (theme from the movie Midnight Cowboy) and "Coconut".
